Network Incidents Visualization System

Network Incidents Visualization System is intended for consolidation and processing of information about the work of network equipment of a mobile network operator. The major advantage of the system is the creation of visual presentation of equipment work condition in real time mode. The system is implemented in the operator’s centers of monitoring and control over the quality of network functioning.

The system gives features to:

  • register, edit and browse incidents that emerge on various network objects;
  • create, coordinate and process applications for planned works on the network;
  • perform centralized storage of the list of network equipment (ranging from the level of commutators to base stations antennae ) classified according to kind, type and manufacturer;
  • provide employers of both major and regional management offices with access to the unified database of equipment and network incidents;
  • visualize the location of network equipment on country map and on maps of large cities;
  • visualize network incidents on country map and on maps of large cities;
  • create equipment downtime statistics (including creation of thematic maps);
  • customize and apply key performance indicators (KPI) to monitor the functioning of network equipment;
  • create and store reports on network incidents, planned and emergency repair works;
  • output information on the videowall.

Users use Internet browser as software.

The system supports the following business functions:

  1. Network infrastructure description and its visualisation on the map;
  2. Tracing events on the network. Planned and casual events, and network failures are shown on the map.

The system allows using videowall to output information on, including representations of all electronic maps with the necessary scale level. Map representations are adjusted with the help of cartographic interface.

Registration of Problem Situations

The input of emerged problem situations is made either semi-automatically or manually.

Semi-Automatic Input

System equipment creates reports on its current condition. Reports are created with varying periodicity. Reports are transferred to the calculation server for processing. On the basis of gained results key performance indicators (KPI) of equipment functioning are calculated. If the value of one or several indicators doesn’t meet the pre-established criteria of equipment work quality, user receives a warning of probable emerging of problem situation and a suggestion to register it.

Manual Input

Users are provided with features to input, edit and delete problem situations on all network objects. In the process of registration user indicates incident time, network data, equipment that underwent an incident, technical site, name of the responsible, reason, downtime start and end times, and other parameters.

In the process of incident registration it is necessary to select equipment that underwent an incident. Selection is made from the reference directory of network objects. The reference has a convenient graphic interface with the feature to search by equipment key, technical site, parental equipment, etc.

Input of New Incident
In the process of inputting an incident user indicates equipment, base stations, responsible specialist, reasons for incident emerging, downtime start time and date, and other information.

Registration of Planned Works

The system allows users to arrange, record and coordinate applications for planned works of network equipment maintenance.

To submit an application for planned works user has to fill in a corresponding blank form. In the application user specifies equipment, type of works, requestor, responsible technician, etc.

In case an application needs coordinating, employers needed for its coordination are as well specified. After application submission, all the employers indicated in it are notified about the application arrival. Applications are coordinated in central or regional management offices.

Approved applications are moved to the register of unfinished planned works. In the process of implementation time frames and quality of works are kept track of. Later planned works are marked as completed. Planned works can be cancelled or put off. Completed planned works are included into the daily report.

At keeping track of the condition of many devices, the feature of visualization of current network condition becomes an extremely important and effective function of the monitoring system. Visualization provides the capability to early detect emerged problems and by that gives a chance to originally avoid a range of actions, directed on problem liquidation.

  • easily interpretable visually presented information about the current condition of the network, and about ongoing and completed works;
  • thematic country maps and large settlement maps with located network objects and information about them;
  • information materials for presentations, conferences, needs analysis and estimation of marketing actions effectiveness.

The system allows to:

  • create, store and edit KPI lists by manufacturer and equipment type;
  • create KPI combinations to describe problem situations;
  • apply KPI aggregations at processing data received from equipment.

Editing KPI, their combinations and aggregations is performed by users of the system. KPI processing is made with the help of stored procedures. The system as well provides syntax checking of created procedure.

Work with aggregated KPI
KPI aggregation is made by uniting indicators into a group. Aggregated indicators represent generalized problem situations that merge a number of specific indicators into a general one. Aggregation is performed by summing, grouping or by other methods of bringing specific indicators to generalized ones.

Report Library

The system has a feature that allows users to create reports about emerged problem situations and the progress of their liquidation. Reports are created for any period of time and are placed for storage in the report library. Access to the report library is controlled by system administrator.
